FS5 911: Big Disappointment

Jo Davis is evil.

You’d think it’d be enough for her that she scribbled “Trial by Fire,” the romance book that introduced us to Howard “Six Pack” Paxton” -- who charmed and hot-tubbed his way onto tons of readers’ All-Time Fave Heroes’ Lists – and scored 2008 RBTB Year’s Best Debut and Contemporary Awards.

But, no. Within “Trial by Fire,” Miz Davis had to go and introduce us to the many big ‘n strappin’ Firefightin’ Mens of Station Five: Tommy Skyler. Sean Tanner. Julian Salvatore.

Did I forget to mention the big-in-all-ways-including-his-IQ-and-Oh-btw-he’s-jez-a’waitin’-on-you-to-slip-into-the-skin-of-the-placeholder-who’ll-initiate-him-into-the-ways-of-amour, beta-with-a-heart-of-alpha Zack Knight?

Yeah. Virgin brainiac. You'd think I'd be jumpin' all "Can I buy you something from Tiffany, Jo?" for that gift. But the real problem with Jo Davis is her new book, "Under Fire" itself, and it's the reason I'm not planning on reading another Firefighters of Station Five book: I can't bear the disappointment.

Cause apparently at the end of every Firefighters of Station Five novel, Miz D plans to tease us with another FS5 boy so hot, he nearly obliterates the hero high we're riding from the book we've just read. And I'm not sure my heart -- or my libido -- can take it. I mean, I barely could stand the wait between "Trial by Fire" and Jo's upcoming FS5 read, the wicked fun and wildly arousing "Under Fire," starring your soon-to-be fave hero of 2009, Zack "Aw, shucks, I'm just a quick learner, is all" Knight, man o' your nerd girl dreams.

At the breaking point from months of feet-to-to-the-fire financial and emotional stress, Zack Knight isn't surprised when the woman whose van he's managed to rear-end on a rain-slicked road turns out to be the exotic dancer of his dreams, and the kind of woman not afraid to say what's on her mind. Basically, that he's an idiot.

She sings a little different tune later that day when her van's forced nearly over the side of a bridge, the vehicle teetering precariously over the icy, rain-swollen-and-rapidly rising river below. Zack and his fellow Station 5 team are called to the scene, and in reaching out to pull her to safety, Zach in effect trades his life for hers.

Sorta. But there begins the delicious, good-ol-fashioned saga of a hero who never met a perilous sitch that didn't batter him to shreds and the heroine whom he literally and figuratively charms the pretty panties off of: Cori, the lap-dancing-her-way-through-nursing-school smarty heroine who's running from a past that just happens to be directly tied to the dangerous man who's seriously threatening Zach's chance at living to see another day, let alone the possibility of his joining the ranks of straight guys over 25 who've actually made love to a woman.

"Under Fire" is a strong, hot and extremely satisfying follow-up to "Trial by Fire." I loved it and, OK, I'm gonna read anything and everything Davis writes, including the hot erom she's got coming out soon, "When Alex Was Bad."

Davis does in "Under Fire" what every great romance writer ought: She gives sexy, fun and sometimes painfully sweet love story that offers one a reason to escape from life for a few luscious hours. More than that, she gives hope. Not just that there are heroes out in the big bad world. But that, given the strength of this second in the FS5 series, the next, "Hidden Fire," is gonna be worth the ridiculous amount of pain she'll inflict making us wait for the damn thing.

So don't say I didn't warn you that you'll still be melting in the Zack afterglow when Jo stealth cold-cocks you with that big ol tease from the story of possibly misunderstood FS5 serial-lover Julian Salvatore. But you're welcome to tell anyone who'll listen -- and if they're wise, they'll listen to every delicious word you'll tell em about "Under Fire" -- that I told you to --

Buy the book.

When everyone else is running OUT of a fire, firefighters run IN. This maybe the only employment that has written into the job description "must be courageous and heroic." I know that's not in my job description.

No, but apparently it was in your marriage contract. :)

Michelle,
Thank you for the awesome review for UNDER FIRE and the plug for the series!! And yes, I'll admit it. I AM evil. But in a good way! >:) I love to torture readers with tidbits, then make them wait... Don't say you won't pick up Julian's story, you'll break my heart! I promise the wait won't be that long...and it will be worth it!

I always love visiting with you and the Bellas, and I know my Station Five guys are eager to hang with the ladies. Pun intended. :) Can't wait until April 13!

Jo

Michelle Buonfiglio said...

lol, Jo! Thanks for dropping by. I couldn't be more excited about having the boys hang here (again, lol) in April. It's so cool they'll be finding the time to visit, and I'll make sure I send everybody an email every Sunday night so the Bellas won't miss 'em. I'm thinking maybe Eve might want to be an honorary Bella, too, just one of the girls...

Suzanne Welsh said...

Ah, Michelle, I am so glad someone else is tortured by Jo's deviousness. Zack is so yummy beta-turned-alpha-for-his-woman that you just want to gobble him up.

Let me give your Bellas another hint, you know the hottub scene? Well, our Jo takes us somewhere else with another interesting scene in Under Fire!

Oh mama!!

Tracy Garrett said...

You mean I have to wait for a month to talk to Six-Pack and Zack? I don't know if I can stand it.

Jo's heroes are so real--they have issues and daily troubles--but they're sexy as all get out. Makes a girl want to dive in and make them feel better. I loved "Trial by Fire" and I can't wait for "Under Fire" to hit the shelves. Congratulations on a great series!

::turns pea green with envy::

I *LOVE* this series. Trial by Fire was one of those books that I finished, flipped back to the beginning and started again.

I'm SO jealous that you've read Zach's book, Michelle! I cannot WAIT to get my hands on it. And Julian is up after that. Woohoo! I can't get enough of these firefighters!

Jo Davis said...

Oh, yes! I agree Eve should be a honorary Bella. The poor thing already feels left out, pining for Sean, she needs a boost from the gals!

Jo Davis said...

Hi Suz!
Thanks for popping in. Um, I think the scene you're referring to involves rope?

And that's all I'm sayin'... yep, evil. >:)

Michelle Buonfiglio said...

The nice thing about green, Kates, is that it looks well on all of us. :)

And, believe me, I'll be lobbying Jo re my Julian campaign any nanosecond now...

Jo Davis said...

Hey Tracy!
Thanks for dropping by. Ya'll, Tracy writes fabulous western historicals with smokin' hot cowboys...check out Touch of Texas and Touched by Love if you want his spurs under your bed. :)

Also want to mention Tracy and Suz are my awesome CP's...they read my books before anyone else, and know all the juicy secrets...

Jo Davis said...

Hi Kati! (waving madly)

I'm glad you loved Howard's story. These guys are dear to my heart, and libido, and I can't get enough of writing about them.

Zack, I just wanted to squeeze and make his world right again, in the beginning...I hope you enjoy his journey. :)

Michelle Buonfiglio said...

Oh, Suz, i was just thinking of that scene at the most inappropriate moment yesterday! Thanks for the refresher. 's'all's I'm sayin'.

But it's SO not fair -- and oh, so, unlike me -- to gloat over having read a book before anyone else. I just want you all to know that FS5-2 is everything you'd hope it'd be. it's...ugh...Zack-a-licious! No. Really. Such a hot read. You'll totally be happy Jo's chosen this chick for our boy. :)

Tracy, you've got it dead on! These guys are the real deal, the reason we read romance at its most elemental. No super-heavy lifting, just bare-bones love story and larger-than-life heroes. Yes! More! Please!

Michelle Buonfiglio said...

Jo, I was just telling my son about Zack this am at the breakfast table, that I wish he were old enough to read the book, cause I think he'd be inspired by Zack for many reasons. But, alas, he's gonna have to wait a few years. He said, "Let me guess, the nerd ends up with the really hot chick, right?" Something like that. :)

Buffie said...

I can't wait to get my hands on Zack and his story. This is one fabulous series and Jo can do firefighters hotter than anyone I know!!!!

Playground Monitor said...

Alas, Trial by Fire is still in my TBR pile and won't emerge until I've written the lessons for the online class I'm teaching in 4 weeks. It's my reward for getting my work done.

But ohmygod I love a nerd who gets the hot chick, so Zack's book sounds great. Guess I'll have to stimulate the economy and buy it.

As MPG said, their job description is the reason they make such great heroes.

Marilyn

Buffie said...

Hey Michelle - I sent you an email a couple weeks back regarding a contest book. Did you ever get the email?

Jo Davis said...

Michelle,
I'm reading your post about your son and nodding. My teenaged son starts high school next year (gasp--am I THAT old??) and is the braniac honors student who has not gotten the girl. Yet. But he's developing his personal "Cool-ness" by playing lead guitar in a teen rock band, and has a concert this summer. :)

I tell him "Just wait for it, everything will come together for you." :) There's a lot of him in Zack with the wishing for someday...

Kati said...

Yes, Michelle, I just prefer a minty green to the pea green look! LOL!

What I really loved about Trial by Fire was the sexin' was really steamy, but infused with a really lovely tenderness. Even when Howard was asking Kat to go places she'd never been before, he was really sweet and tender with her about how he did it. Kind of leading her gently. I think it fulfills a fantasy a lot of women have, you know? A big, handsome guy being slightly dominant, but really tender about it?

Or is that just me??

::blushes::

Jo Davis said...

Hello Marilyn!
I totally hear you on the TBR pile! I'm FINALLY getting to read some awesome books now that I've turned in my lastest book. Yay! Freedom awaits! Well, for a week or so... :)

Good luck with those lessons!

Michelle Buonfiglio said...

definitely not just you, Kati. there's nothin' slightly to the dominant about my gently leading 6'6" firefighter fantasy hero. ::trying to force a blush that nobody'd buy anyways::

Hey Buffie: I think/thought I wrote you back. Can you write me again and remind me? mbuonfiglio@rbthebook.com? And I'm with you on Jo's firefighters. :)

Marilyn! Good call on stimulating the economy while stimulating your, em, mind! You'llhave to tell us more about your online course. Good on you for giving yourself a treat to look forward to. And man, what a treat!

On the 'everybody loves firefighters' thing; once we were having some furniture delivered, and the guys doing it were off-duty firefighters. So, I was getting a little verklempt about their jobs and the guys were like, of course everybody likes us, we rescue people and we don't carry guns. What's not to love?

Stacy~ said...

Hey Jo! Morning Bellas! I have the day off so I'm a little behind on blogging this morning.

I think the willingness to put oneself at risk to help someone else is just amazing. When you look at a day like 9/11, that really gives us a big picture of what firefighters do every single day. That's an incredible way to give back.

I am so looking forward to "meeting' Zack and getting to know him better. I love that he's smart because I find that very sexy, especially considering what he does for a living. I do wonder how he'll compete with Howard, who has my undying lust-er, love already.

I just thank Kati and whoever else it was who raved about this amazing book. How many weeks is it now Jo????

Jo Davis said...

Kati,

You hit on what I wanted in a team of heroes when Howard and the gang "introduced" themselves to me a couple of years ago. I'd been reading so many books at the time where the hero was unlikable or the hero/heroine snarked at each other for 3/4 of the book. THEN were suddenly in love at the end. WHAA?

I longed for heroes who were larger than life, honorable, and knew how to treat a woman. That's the foundation of my men at their core, even when life isn't being kind to them. They never forget she is to be cherished.

Stacy~ said...

Well I'm off in a bit to go downtown, so I'll miss all the fun :( Talking about hot guys is definitely one of my favorite pastimes, and chatting with a wonderful author like Jo is another. I'll try to pop in later this evening...

Jo Davis said...

Hey, Stacy! (waving madly)

The countdown is 8 weeks! Won't be long now. Yay!

Can I say how fortuate and blessed I am to have you guys at my back?

Playground Monitor said...

You'll have to tell us more about your online course.

Well since you asked so nicely...

It's a course on how to write for the confessions and romance magazines. For me it's been a great way to earn a few bucks and make my accountant happy at tax time when I also hand him a stack of expenses. More info can be found at www.heartofdixie.org/workshop.html.

I love firefighters. I have nothing else to say. I just love them, even the not so pretty ones. We need them a lot in California. :)

Buffie said...

Thanks Michelle, I just emailed you again.

Jo -- forgive me for not remembering the gal firefighter's name, but is her book going to be done? Will she be the last in the series?

As much as I am looking forward to Zack's story, I do believe Julian's story will be a hold on to the seat of your pants book. All of them are going to be great!

Kati - I so agree with you!

Jo Davis said...

Hello, Kate!
I agree, there's just something about them, no matter their age or looks...they command a certain respect.

Jo Davis said...

Buffie,
The female on the team is Eve Marshall, who is nursing her secret (or not-so-secret since a couple of the team members have noticed) love for Sean. That book is currently planned as the 5th in the series.

I'm working on my outline for end of the series now, and I have to say there are some stunning shake-ups on the horizon for the entire team...

Jo Davis said...

Buffie, Ps-- You're right about Julian's story. The evil that occured in TRIAL BY FIRE looks like a trip to Disneyland compared to what Julian faces...

Yep, more teasing. :)

Michelle Buonfiglio said...

Once, my son's friend looked at me and smiling said, you're just plain evil. And I said, "That's Mrs. Evil to you."

Well, Jo, I'm gon call you Miz Evil, cause I must say I've had in mind that you just might have a sinful lil shakeup comin and I've shared it with a friend. I'm hanging on for dear life waitin on whether it'll happen.

Buffie said...

Jo, I love all the teasing because I know you are an author who will follow through 150 percent!!

Hmmm. Obviously I need to politely suggest (read beg) Trial by Fire to my local library... Share the love I say :)

Jo Davis said...

Michelle--oh, yes, major shakeups comin' your way! Promise.

Jessa--Hello! Thanks for stopping by. Snow! It's muggy here in Texas and like 78 degrees in my house! Had to turn on a fan... LOL

Orannia--Good to see you here! I love how Michelle couches her phrases! Very cool. :)

Jane said...

I love Jo's heroes. I'm looking forward to reading Zack's story. If I remember correctly, he's a virgin. Can't wait to find out his backstory. Although he's not a firefighter, I would love to see Shane as a future hero.

Michelle Buonfiglio said...

Ah, Jane, veddy INtahdestink!

Oh, thanks, Orannia! Can you imagine that some people might call that a run-on sentence! The nerve of them! And, just let us know; we'd all be happy to write letters of recommendation on your behalf to your library so they're get "Trial by Fire."

Oh, Jessa. sorry to hear about the floweres. they're so purty. But nuthin brightens up a girl's chilly day like an eager, intellectual virgin hero, I always say. Glad to send Jo's your way on this one. :)

Lis said...

OMG - I cannot believe I'm so late to this party!! I LOVE JO DAVIS'S FF SERIES!! Course, I've got a reason to, since my son is an almost-firefighter, and I've been learnin' and livin' his dream since he was 3 years old (now 16, set to graduate HS this year, going for the Fire Science degree in college). And yes, I'll worry like crazy once he's actually a full-fledged FF - now, the guys still watch out for him when he's on the fire scene with the Explorer group he's involved in. And yes, these guys ARE real-life heroes, in so many ways. And they're just regular people too, with real-life issues. And yes, it really is a brotherhood (with some sisters in there too!) And yes, Jo's captured all of this PERFECTLY! I can't wait to read Zach's book!

ev said...

I finally get Google and Blogger to get along and let me sign in and I get tortured even more????

Not freaking fair!! LOL

I will buy Under Fire but I ain't reading it until all the books are done.

Yeah, right.

I am sure it will join TBF in my fave pile.I seldom re-read books because I have so many to read the first time, but TBF is one of those few.

Too bad I won't have a digital version of the new one to take on my trip.

Unless there's an ARC of that hiding somewhere???? A girl can dream, can't she?

Jo Davis said...

Hi Jane,

I have gotten some requests for Shane's story. Our hunky homicide detective needs lovin', too!

Believe me, Shane is on my radar for the future... :)

Jo Davis said...

Hi Lis!
Great to have you here. I'm so glad you loved Howard's story. Enthusiam like yours and all my readers makes my day. :)

Congrats on your son following his dream to become a firefighter. He's lucky to have a mom like you supporting him every step of the way--no matter how scary it might be for you!

Jo Davis said...

Hello, Ev!

It's great to see you here! Hearing my Howard has made the keeper shelf makes me smile.

Alas, ARC's are few and hard to come by...our Michelle has great connections! :D

But you are very kind, Jo, to keep me in mind so that I can let the Bellas know ASAP what's comin down the pike with the FS5 boys. We really appreciate your generosity.

ev, it's SO unlike you or any of the Bellas to shamelessly position yourselves for arcs or tidbits about books that arent' out yet. I'm shocked! SHOCKED I tell you!

And, how, Katiebabs! You should see the stuff I had to edit out! boy howdy. Let's just say the stuff was part of the reason I gave praise in November's Give Thanks for Romance column...

Lis, you've raised yourself up a hero, ma'am. Thank you to both of you. It's very cool to read your perspective on the reality and how Jo captures the everyday w/in the FS5 books.

Jo Davis. I love you. Okay, I love your brain for inventing these fabulous characters. Can't wait.

Michelle, did I tell you the wrestling coach is a firefighter--honest. AND, he invited all the wrestlers and their overly sexed mothers to the firestation for a demonstration, AND he put on all his gear AND then talked about wrestling moves...like the Penetration move. And then, I think I fainted...

Marilyn--how exciting. You will do fabulously.

Stacy,
Nope, Alex from WHEN ALEX WAS BAD, being released on August 5, is a criminal defense attorney. It's a scorching erotic suspense about a couple who agree on an open marriage to spice things up...only it leads to a plot for murder.

ALEX has also been optioned as a major motion picture, with the screenplay in the works. :)

Jo Davis said...

Woohoo, Marilyn!! Congrats!

Deep breaths...no panicking allowed. :) You'll do great!

Arrggghhh! Michelle, you are such a tease!!! I cannot WAIT for Zack's book. And THANK YOU, Jo, for the peek at Julian's cover:) I have to admit, he's the one I'm waiting for. I love seeing a jerk reform.

And firefighters? They're just the best. Sexy, and strong, and they can rescue my kitten from a tree without batting an eye. (Hypothetically, of course, my cats don't really climb the trees.) Plus they've got all that adrenaline going after a fire and it's got to be channeled somehow;) What's not to love?

Michelle Buonfiglio said...

Marilyn! Congratulazione! How flippin cool, and, yes, you absolutely may panic, cause when you get there you're gonna wow em! If anybody was meant to write for Hquin, 'tis you. And you know we'll all be sending our wishes and thougts and prayers, etc., your way while you're doing your thing.

Is this something you'd like us to support by being there, or just via brain power?

Manda, I'm thinking of encouraging my kitty to leave the house and climb a tree just so I can call the fire dept.

Thanks, peej! Yeah, we complain about the torture, but you're much nicer about it than I am. The payoff's definitely worth it on this one. But I'm already getting bitter about waiting for the next. Guess I'm not so nice as I thought...

you lucky girl, scottsgal!

Ames, i don't even know if I can say anything about that without getting evenmore bitter than I am over waiting for jo's next book. my god, if'n Ida knowntthat when I wrote that blog about him, it'd probably have gotten filtered by the censor.
