Erin McCarthy GuestBlog: Viva Las Vegas

Contest!!! Erin's giving one lucky commenting Bella a copy of "Bit the Jackpot!"
The first Erin McCarthy novel I read was "Houston, We Have a Problem," and from then on, whenever I wanted hot and funny in a book, I looked for one of hers.

Now, you can add Vegas vamps to that list, since she's got a great series set in Sin City. The heroes ooze sexuality. And today, you'll meet some of the heroines who are sassy, smart, and, never, ever TSTL.

Please join us from Vegas, Bellas, for a warm buongiorno for Erin...

Hi to all the Bellas and a huge thanks to Michelle for inviting me to hang out here while she’s living it up in Vegas. I LOVE that town myself and run away to it whenever I can. It’s like Disney for adults, with everything shiny, completely over the top, and beckoning you to just forget reality for a few days and have fun.

What do I like most about Vegas?

Gambling: Okay, so that’s obvious, but true. I’m lousy at it, because I’m conservative with my betting, but I’m also competitive. I prefer games of strategy like poker and despise slots because I have no control over the outcome.

Buffets: Hello. Food. Lots of it. I’m there. Check out the buffets at the Bellagio and the Rio. My husband looked at my dessert plate, filled with a mere seventy-three pastries, give or take, and warned me I would get sick. I didn’t. Maybe I can’t hold my alcohol, but I can pound a pastry.

Shows: I love music and dancing and sitting in the audience being entertained. Zoomanity was intriguing. My husband called it the naked circus, but it was actually very fluid and beautiful. Then there’s Love, based on the Beatles music. All it takes is the mere mention of John, Paul, George, and Ringo and I girly squeal, so this was completely my thing.

Then I got to wondering what exactly my various heroines consider the best part of living in Vegas. So I asked them, and here’s what they said, so to speak.

Cara Kim: Money. The best part of living in Vegas is that I can rake in a ton of money exotic dancing to pay for my education and my grandmother’s nursing home. Okay, so not what I always pictured myself doing, but I stay behind the screen, and the bouncers make sure no freaks come near me. Until Seamus Fox came along, but for the most part he’s more hottie than freak, except for that whole mind reading thing, which is seriously irritating.

Alexis Baldizzi- Carrick: Crime. There’s a ton of it, like any other major city. But in Vegas I get to prosecute criminals to the fullest extent of the law and there is no better feeling than watching some scumbag get tossed in jail and kept off the streets. I was positive Ethan Carrick had kidnapped my sister-

Brittany Baldizzi interrupts: I wasn’t kidnapped, I was trying to save Ethan’s soul from eternal damnation.

Alexis Baldizzi- Carrick: Whatever. He was an arrogant you-know-what, but I fell in love with him and now live in his glitzy casino. Go figure.

Brittany Baldizzi: People. I just love how everyone in Vegas is so friendly-

Alexis Baldizzi-Carrick interrupts: They’re probably drunk.

Brittany Baldizzi ignores her sister: -and cheerful. That’s why I don’t understand why Corbin is so moody all the time, but I have news that I’m sure will put a smile on his face. Or send him screaming.

Gwenna Carrick: I like the freedom of Vegas, where no one knows me and my past and I can start fresh, and be independent. Even though my ex-husband is a bloody idiot and I wish he’d fry in the desert instead of calling me a hundred times a day, I think I’m ready to meet someone new in Sin City. If you know of any candidates, give him my number, but leave out the nine hundred year old vampire bit.

Encore! I feel like the luckiest girl on the planet. Last night we saw "O" at the Bellagio. It was spectacular: modern dance, water ballet, theater, opera, circus, world-music festival. The performers were incredible athletes, and I watched with my mouth gaping like the big yahoo I apparently am when you bring me to Vegas.

Erin!

Welcome and glad to see you here.

Oh my gosh, I ADORED High Stakes!! I found out about it by accident. It was the best thing ever. Can't wait to read the next installment.

You are such a talented writer. I originally found you in the anothologies you've been with ... about four years ago. I was hooked on every author in those books and you've all gone onto better and bigger things.

Life is grande. Congrats on your many successes.

Welcome, Erin!!!! I just want to say that I love your books. I haven't checked out these vamps yet but I've put them on my must buy list. The first book I read was The Pregnancy Test and followed it up with Heiress For Hire and I never looked back. They are sexy, laugh out loud great books. :o)

I've never been to Vegas but I like to gamble. Unlike you, I do like the slots. I'm more of a loner and haven't learned to play well with others yet. :o)

Buongiorno Erin and Bellas! So sorry so late this morning. No, I wasn't out all night gambling and drinking; I haven't touched a slot machine. Yet.

And I did have a line on this big convention of adult film technologies, but there was nothing there to tell you about. Very disappointing.

But you might be interested to know there's a show here called, "Bite." According to one ad, "the vampire master captivates young women , and before the fangs come out,the feeding frenZy begins as scantily clad young women bare their souls (and chests) in the name of eternal life." Not sure whether the master bares anything.

I'm pretty curious, though. Probably stand a better chance of getting Dave to Justin Timberlake than to Bite. You know what I mean.

If vamps lived anywhere, Vegas would be really likely, cause everything comes out at night, and there have to be more gorgeous bodies here than in any other one place.

I don't know whether Erin met any vampires when she came to Vegas, but I do wonder how these novels came about.

What do you want to know about Erin, her books, and her vamps?

Honest to God, I can't walk out on a gaming floor here w/out thinking of Ethan and his casino.

Hi Erin! I already have the book, so don't enter me in the drawing. I just wanted to stop by and say hello, and hope to find the time to read soon.

Michelle Buonfiglio said...

oh, yeah, Heiress for Hire! Who knew poultry could be so sexy? And there's this side-by-side scene that is soooo hot and sweet.

Hi Erin, would love to read Bit by the Jackpot. Haven't been to Vegas in 15 years, and I guess I've been missing out. You gave us some great highlights, any places that we should cross off our to-do lists?

Amy S. said...

Hi Erin, Bit by the Jackpot is on my to buy list. I haven't been to Vegas but would love to go.

Welcome Erin........I have never been to Vegas, but it is one of the places that I have on my list to do. I have not read Bit by the Jackpot, but I have been acquiring more of your books all the time. The most recent being A Date With The Other Side which is great.

Hi Erin!

I have never been to Las Vegas but my parents go there periodically for vacation and it sounds wonderful.

Erin - welcome :) I'm off to hunt for your books ASAP - I love romantic comedies (or 'rom coms'). I'm ashamed to admit that I didn't know about them before, but that's why I love Michelle - she introduces me to so many new and amazing authors :) Does it matter which book I start with first please?

'O' sounds amazing. The Cirque du Soleil is in New Zealand at present with Varekai, and I'm going to see it for my birthday! I can't wait :)

Have a lovely weekend all (it's Friday here :)

I love Erin's books. My first book was also "Houston, we have a problem" and I absolutely loved it, like all other books that I have read so far.

I LOVE Erin's books...which I think she knows...or at least I hope she knows by now. The Pregnancy Test was my first McCarthy book, and I quickly hunted down the backlist. I think that I have almost all of her previous books. I know that I am missing Mouth to Mouth.

I loved High Stakes, but haven't read the new one yet. Looking forward to it though.

Welcome, Erin!

I'm embarrassed to say that I haven't read any of your books yet. I think your books about Las Vegas sound like fun reads! Do you have a favorite of your own books?

Jennifer Y. said...

Oh, and I have never been to Vegas....also the cover for Bled Dry is one of my favorites!

Hi Erin and Bellas,
Welcome, Erin and thanks a lot for adding so many must reads to my huge pile! I've read "Houston..." but haven't gotten to the Vegas list yet. You can be sure I will!

Won't surprise you then, then, that I've never been to the real Vegas either. Everyone says it's a "love it or hate it" kind of place. Clearly this is the "love it" group! And you all have me convinced that I should check it out. I think I'd go mostly for the shows. I've been wanting to see "Love" ever since I heard they were making it. I'm right up there with the planet's biggest (most obnoxious maybe) Beatle fans - so, Erin, I will swoon right along with you! It also makes me sad that Siegfried and Roy aren't there anymore - no matter what people might say, Roy's accident was horrible and really a loss.

And I'm sorry I was gone yesterday - loved all the boy-crush reminiscing. Loved Tiger Beat myself == and anyone remember the sister mag "16"? I read them way back when they were still doing Beatles and then Monkees stories. Yikes.

Thanks for coming Erin - keep up the wonderful writing!!!

Hi all! I see some familiar faces.
Thanks so much for your wonderful comments and welcome. :-)

Michelle, I wondered about the porn convention... my hubby has a work convention every year in Vegas in Jan sandwiched between the two porn conventions, which I'm sure is a source of disappointment to many of his co-workers. Sorry the weather is so lousy for you! I just got back from New Orleans and it was 75 and sunny... just the way I like it.

Anyhoo, as to your question of how the books came about, I only knew I wanted my vampires involved in politics. Then I spent about a week considering and discarding settings for the book. When Vegas popped into my head, it was a big gigantic DUH moment, like "why didn't I think of that first??" Vegas is perfect for vampires because you can do virtually anything at night, and no one is going to blink at a little eccentricity.

Cathy, as for places to avoid, for me, I tend to avoid the major chain restaurants. I figure I can eat at the Rainforest Cafe anywhere. I go for the buffets or the hotel restaurants at the Venetian, Bellagio, etc. But that's a personal preference. And I don't stray too far off the Strip either.

Okay, I'm going to post and be back in a minute. I'm packing to go skiing in NY. :-)

I just got home- today was a spoil me day- mani, pedi and haircut. and lunch at McD's. LOL

I hope Brittany sends Corbin screaming!! I can't wait.

The first, and only, book of yours I read was High Stakes. I loved it. I immediately added you to the tbr author list and have been looking for the books.

Where the heck are you going skiing in NY? We haven't had any snow yet although they were making it the last couple of nights finally. The slopes have been bare!

Michelle- Dave would rather see JT than scantily clad young ladies??

I LOVE all Erin's books especially the Vegas Vamps. High Stakes was the first paranormal I ever read. I didn't think I'd be into the whole vampire thing. Erin proved me wrong. Now I can't get enough!! I devoured High Stakes and Bit the Jackpot. Loved Alexis. She is a blast. I can't wait for Brittney and Corbin's story :)

Mouth to Mouth is one of my favs!! You have to get that one.

would love to get Bit the Jackpot! I've never been to Vegas either but would love to go some day. I would be sitting at the poker tables. I also heard they have great shows in Vegas. This is one place I hope to one day vacation. Erin hope you have a successful 2007!

Jennifer Y. said...

I have been looking for it Kelley, but haven't found it in my local bookstores...when I get a little extra money, it is the first one I'll order online.

Erin McCarthy said...

Hey Kalen, thanks for posting because now I finally got to see your cover too. Love it!

Orannia, I suggest starting with Houston, We Have a Problem. It was only my second full length book, but it's still a fav of mine.

Jennifer, hold off for a few months because Mouth To Mouth is being re-released in mass market size and I just got the cover. It's gorgeous and HOT. Sexy, sexy man on it. ;-)

Lizees, I go nowhere without my boys. The Beatles are somewhere in my pocket, my purse, my shirt, my iPod... somewhere on me at all times. LOL.

Carol, I think my all time fav book of mine is Heiress For Hire. It is probably the most tender story I've ever written.

Ev, this is the first weekend the slopes are open so we're taking advantage of it. The mani-pedi sounds lovely.

For everyone who is waiting for Brittany and Corbin, I really, really hope you enjoy their story. ::nail biting::

I'll pick a winner as soon as I can get back online in NY.

Have a great weekend everyone! Thanks for letting me play. :-)

Erin,
Nie to chat. Enjoy your great books. When I was in L.V. with my husband we had a blast. What a place. Saw Neil Diamond and just enjoyed the whole scene.

Nice to hear all about your writing and books. have to read your latest and best ever. Congrats on all your future endeavors.
Love L.V. hope to get there this year. Last time I was there it looked totally different.

Okay, I've been resistant to paranormal for a long while, but it seems I must get over it. Sounds like your books are great fun, Erin!

And I love Las Vegas, even though I'm sure my grandmother would not approve. We actually usually go in the summer when it's 100+ degrees...I just sit by the pool, read and drink myself silly while my husband plays poker in a cool, dark room. The shows are always good and we keep getting comped at every place we stay (I'm sure it's a mistake...we are definitely not high rollers and my husband has a very common name!). Viva!

Hey Erin,

It's great to have you on the blog! I am a huge fan and agree with Michelle that Houston, You Have a Problem is super yummy. Can't wait to read your latest book. It looks really fun.

I've been to Vegas two times and liked it in moderation. All that money, gambling, and sin get pretty overwhelming for me. And ALL the crowds of people. Where do they come from. It is fun to people watch, and I could see how it would be a great setting for a novel.

Michelle, is it today that you're renewing your vows with Elvis? If so, CONGRATULATIONS to you and your Hunka Burnin' Love. Sounds like you're having a fabulous time and, if nothing else, have lots of fun new topics to explore on the blog.

I'm not much of a fan of theatre/live performance shows. Nothing really impressed me (I hate to admit that includes Les Misérables), but that was before I saw "O". I totally agree with you about the show "O". I was blown away by the experience. It really is a must see!

Hi Erin! Love your stories!

I'm going to have to experience Vegas through the books for now. I was only there once for a day many, many years ago. I didn't even go to a casino. I love to read stories set there. It sounds like a fun place.

I've never been to Las Vegas, yet! I almost made it on a road trip, from IL through the northern states down through Yellowstone, with my Aunt but she became sick near Salt Lake City and we had to head home. So close... Someday I hope to get there.

Sorry I disappeared... having spotting Internet access here at the ski resort. Though the 8 inches of snow are lovely.

Reading in the hot sun by the pool in Vegas with a drink sounds like heaven to me!

I think I could spend a week in Vegas and see a different show every night. I find live entertainment fascinating.

Michelle, love the pic of you and your hubby with Elvis!

Thanks for letting me drop by and hang out. :-)
