Carly Phillips PlotMonkeysBlog: The King Of The Jungle According To Carly

Contest!!! Carly's offering one lucky commenting Bella "Bella's Choice" of an autographed Hot Zone novel!

PlotMonkeys winners thus far: wed/canadacole; thrs/shannon

What's up with these women totally obsessing on hunky sports figures? I'd never go all gaga over some athlete just because he's handsome, has a lithe, strong body, and poses for nearly-nude photos with a fine sheen of sweat coating his abs.
Ok, I would and have (ciao, Fabio Cannavaro)! And apparently Carly Phillips feels the same, because she's here to top off PlotMonkeys.com 'King of the Jungle' Week with a tribute to a kinda new class of hero which just might surprize you. So, Bellas, please welcome back our girl, Carly, with warm almost-to-the-weekend buongiorno...

My king of the jungle varies depending on which book I am writing so for today’s king of the jungle, let me introduce you to a hero quite unlike any I’ve done before. John Roper, star of HOT PROPERTY, (aka Hot Zone book # 4) is, was, and always will my metrosexual hero. What do I mean by that?

I’m going to explain but bear with me. My interest in the concept of metrosexual athletes began with my obsession with Mike Piazza when he was with the NY Mets. Last time I visited the Bellas I posted a picture of my favorite hottie but I’m nice so I’m going to share it again. Back to my hero. I recalled the Daily News or the NY Post I can’t remember which doing an article about Mike’s habits and discussing designer haircuts versus the barber around the corner, back waxing for men, manicures, and a love of clothing and expensive things. Not a big deal. Who can fault a man for enjoying the nicer things in life, especially if he’s a star athlete?

When I started the Hot Zone books, Micki the youngest sister and star of Hot Number, needed a best friend and John Roper was born. A connoisseur of fine wine and of course finer women, Roper was just calling out to be tamed and he will be in HOT PROPERTY (7/08). Roper is a challenge to write because he isn’t the guy’s guy I typically create. Hair gel is essential to this man and so are silk sheets but that doesn’t mean he’s soft. Oh, no. He’s hard and male (take that any way you want!). And to tide you over, I’ve included some metrosexual men to drool over.

Who’s your favorite star metro? Or do you have a metro man in your life you want to share with us? My hubby’s somewhat in between but mostly a guy’s guy. Unsure what I mean? Check out the Sports Illustrated Quiz from
Espn Nation (2003) before answering!

Hope you had fun today. Whoever posts is eligible to win their choice of a signed Hot Zone book (Hot Stuff, Hot Number, or Hot Item).

Hello!

Great post!

I have to go with Clive Owen...at least in that pic. He wasn't so metro in King Arthur. Jude Law and Christian Bale aren't so bad either....looks anyway.

carly phillips said...

I have to say personally, I'm not as into metro men as I am into guy's guys, however, Mike is my main exception. And if they look like the hotties I posted, I'll take'em! Hi, Bellas, and Michelle and THANK YOU for having me again and hosting the plotmonkeys!!! :)

Mornin' Carly :)

LOL Jennifer - I was thinking of Clive Owen too, but because of how rough and manly he looked "King Arthur" - loved him in that movie.

I'm not a fan of the metrosexual male. I would take a blue collar guy with a little grease under his fingernails any day over a metro. The idea of a guy getting a manicure and all that stuff just does not do it for me. Not that I don't want my guys to be clean - frequent showers are a must - but having a guy smell or look prettier than me just creeps me out LOL. So no James Bond, no Ryan Seacrest types, no Justin Timberlakes for moi.

Pat said...

Oooh, Mike Piazza - I liked him when he was an LA Dodger. I am a Dodger fan and hope someday to get to the stadium.

My daughter who is a Met fan - and I went to game #2 at Shea for the playoffs last year. It was fun even tho my Dodgers lost and I behaved myself. The Met fans however were obnoxious. What could I expect - LOL - I was in enemy territory. But as Estelle Getty used to say, I digress!

Happy w/e to all.

I believe this is my first visit to this sitel

good Morning Carly!! I see your Apple is still working.

Michelle- yes, I do loose control of everything connected to my brain when Toby is around- and he didn't disappoint last night either. Can you say front row- again??? This time though he didn't have a shirt on that would unsnap and show off that 6 pack- it's -40 with the wind chill here.

Mornin' Carly! Thanks for joining us today, we're so glad you're here!

Mornin' Bellas! Well, this answer will be ridiculously easy for me to answer. Becks, Becks, Becks. I love that man! He's all stylish and sexy with just a slight dirty edge to him. Delicious. Last time I talked about him, I believe chocolate sauce and whipped cream were mentioned. I'll stick with that.

If I can't have Becks, I'd take Jude Law. He's also beautiful, and has that whole metro thing going on. Plus, he's a good daddy, I appreciate that, even if he does like to snog the nanny! SNORT!

Hmmmm...I can't think of one off the top of my head. Although, I think an ex- soap star is a metro sexual. Anyone hear of Victor Webster?? He played Nicholas Alamain on Days Of Our Lives. Recently has been playing bit parts in movies, but just this week was on NCIS, and CSI Miami. I think he is HOT...and he definately takes care of his looks, but is also a mans man. He has a black belt in martial arts, and has been in those Ultimate Fight Club things.

My problem is, I have a hard time distinguishing from Metro Sexual to them being for the other team. Anyone else with this problem?

Beth said...

I love love love the HOt Zone books and can't wait for more.Metro star I really like Oden from the Mummy movies

Gigi said...

I guess as far as a metro guy Clive Owen would have to be a favorite.

My guy is a guys-guy. He dresses for work but is a jeans and t-shirt guy when he gets home.

amy*skf said...

Hi Carly, Hi Bellas!

Kellyf--LOL, I was thinking the same thing. Although when I was young(er) I had so many guy friends who played for the other team, and some were exceptionally dreamy--I would ache at night for them to change their mind...But Pat, I digress too!

So, I like looking at metros, just not sure about my libido with them.

Oh and Clive is so NOT a metro--my libido is definate when I look at him.

What about Craig--er help me out Marykate--oh, Daniel Craig, the new Bond--he's such a guy, but metro as well, is your husband like that Carly?

carly phillips said...

I'm hoping that people will pick up Hot Property and Roper despite his being Metro b/c I don't overly focus - but he is who he is. I created him in one book, and got letters asking for him, so he had to have his story. And he is such a sweetheart!

My husband is really not metro. He's a guys' guy but occasionally there'll be fussy special shaving stuff or shampoo in the bathroom that he bought. But waxing or manicures? NOOOOOOOO! Hahah :)

katie said...

Isn't George Clooney a metrosexual...or Denzel Washington? I know that even guys (even ones who don't play for the other team, as I should say) think he is hot. Both of them always look perfectly coiffed (okay, I can't spell today). I love a metrosexual as long as he is not so into himself to not be into me...lol. If they know more about spa treatments than me, no way.

ev said...

Pick up Roger!?!?!? Hell, I have been begging you- duh!!! I can't wait until it comes out!!!!

BTW Carly- when I was at one of my local Border the other day, they had all the books out with the new covers, on their own shelf, with a card with your name on it, very prominently displayed. Meant to tell you that. Senior moment and all.

Personally, I don't mind a bit of metro in a guy. Beats some of the schmucks I dated in my former life (B.M.- before marriage). I see many men where I get my mani/pedi done come in- most of them married, and older too. Some actually come when their wives do and get a mani. They get the pedi too, which is better than doing it yourself especially if you are a diabetic. And cheaper than a podiatrist visit. And being the rocker chick that I still channel, it doesn't make them any less of a man than a hunk who throws on the tool belt and hard hat. Nother story.

What is so wrong with a guy who likes to take care of himself and likes the finer things in life? Silk Sheets?? Yummy!! My little heart thumpity, thump, thumps at the thought. Of course, they are just one step away from silk scarves. They don't leave marks like cuffs do. Did I ever mention my first husband was a cop??

Now if they get too vain about their looks, well, then that becomes a whole nother thing and I will pass.

Aisling said...

David Beckham is definitely my fave metro man. Move over Posh Spice

Amy S. said...

Clive Owen and Christian Bale

Maria Duncan said...

I think Jude Law is who would come to mind for me. I loved him in The Holiday.

amy*skf said...

Ev, you never cease to amaze me--a cop? But I agree, my husband is a guy, capital 'G', he built our house, he can build anything, his job is installation of high end theatre systems--but, he loves to smell good--Bulgari for men is the latest one he uses and when we go out he looks sharp! He knows what to wear.

Don't you think most men are a combo platter--and aren't we happy.

Carly, I don'y think there'll be a problem with women wanting to pick-up his story.

And Stacy, I meant to tell you, LOL, I hate it when they're prettier than me too (or I used to)
Kind of what Katie was talking about too. Can you imagine dating a guy who was prettier than you AND constantly had to look in a mirror or go to the men's room to freshen-up?

amy*skf said...

Stace and Jennifer Y. I never saw King Arthur--too much of old schooler--Camelot all the way for me--but I'd be interrested in finding out if it's worth it to rent. So tell.

I do love me some Clive Owen.

canadacole said...

Hi Carly!

Here I was thinking I didn't know any of the PlotMonkeys and I just now realized I have read you and loved it! Looking forward to more "HOT" books!

I used to date a metro guy. It was very eye-opening for me since he put more time and effort into his appearance than I did, but I certainly appreciated it. To this day my hormones do a happy little dance whenever I catch a whiff of the cologne he used to wear. I definitely get the appeal. Strangely though, I can't think of any celeb crushes that fit the category.

carly phillips said...

George? Someone say GEORGE CLOONEY? He's been my freebie for years, LOLOL. I love George. OK he's metro. Denzel? Maybe yes. And then I have a new hottie I love ...
Shamar Moore from Criminal Minds. YUM YUM!

Jennifer Y. said...

Stacy: I feel you on the metrosexual thing (especially the Ryan Seacrest part). I am not a BIG fan of them in real life, but then again I don't really know any...I was struggling trying to think of names to give last night when I posted.

But I do like a guy who is comfortable in who he is and not ashamed to be himself whether that is a guy's guy or a metrosexual.

Carly: Of course we will still get the book. Your stories are great! I'm a big fan!

I don't recall ever reading about a metrosexual hero in a book. Can anyone think of any (besides Carly's upcoming book)?

Jennifer Y. said...

Oooh..Shamar Moore...nice one there Carly!

And, amy*skf, I really enjoyed King Arthur. Been a while since I watched, but it has lots of action and a bit of romance. I might need to watch it again soon. Ioan Gruffudd plays Lancelot and he is not that bad to look at either. Hugh Dancy who plays Galahad is nice looking as well.

Tina Martinesi said...

Carly, I can relate to your Mike Piazza obsession, I had a similar obsession back in the early 80's when Lee Mazzilli (also NY Mets)was in his prime. I think Lee was metrosexual before it was even invented...lol
Can't wait for the next Hot Zone book, I've loved them all!!

Gram said...

Hi all,
Love those baseball guys. Thanks for the pix.

MaryKate said...

jennifer y. said: Hugh Dancy who plays Galahad is nice looking as well.

Hugh is a kissin' cousin of mine (same last name, and he's like a 6th cousin twice removed or something). I've of course, never met him, but isn't he adorable?!?!!

How 'bout Orlando Bloom as a metrosexual? I'm not sure if he's really metro so much as British.

Vivi Anna said...

An old boss of mine was a Metrosexual...OMG he was HAWT, and completely straight. And the man could daaaaaance....f*&^ me he gave me the shivers just looking at him. But he was happily married.... :-( good for his wife bad for me!!!

I like Christian Bale, and Becks is HAWT but slimy....which I don't mine one bit!!!

MaryKate said...

Indeed. I'd be MORE than happy to hose him down. You can watch, Vivi. See how I am?! Always giving!

For some reason that made me chuckle.

My hubby is wonderful but definitely a guy's guy. My brother is more of a metrosexual so I know the difference. Great post Carly! Very fun to read!

amy*skf said...

Marykate, you little name dropper--but deservedly so.

Jennifer Y., Marykate made me laugh too--
something about that british accent--it throws us yanks for a loop...

Becks is HAWT but slimy--that made me laugh too. Good one Vivs--I need to be more open minded:

"And it was dirty, and I LIKED it"
from the movie Carrie.

Carly and everyone else who mentioned George Clooney--I adore Clooney, but you guys, he is not a metro. Is he?

MaryKate said...

Carly and everyone else who mentioned George Clooney--I adore Clooney, but you guys, he is not a metro. Is he?

Absolutely not, Ames. He's a man's man, as far as I'm concerned. I think of him an awful lot like Sinatra and the brat pack back in the day. He runs with the hottest actors in Hollywood, has a large group of guy friends, is a confirmed bachelor and is as handsome as they come.

The phrase, "Men want to be him and women want to do him" absolutely applies to Clooney IMHO.

katie said...

Clooney is kinda a metro...I think. He's a combo of a guy's guy and a metro. Has anyone ever seen him when he is not perfectly coiffed? I think Denzel is the same thing a combo man.

I just don't like it when guys look more in the mirror than me, have more beauty products than me, etc. That is NOT cool.

Jennifer Y. said...

Clooney had some interesting hair back during his "Facts of Life" and "Roseanne" days...definitely not a metro back then. But now he is well-groomed...but he may not be as metro as some others. The only pure metro that I can think of is Ryan Seacrest.

Maureen said...

Brad Pitt, George Clooney. They definnitely spend more time on their appearance than many women do.

Jennifer Y. said...

What is a combo of a guy's guy and a metrosexual called? A Getrosexual?

MaryKate said...

Here's the wiki definition of "Metrosexual"

Metrosexual was coined in 1994 (as was its noun, metrosexuality) by British journalist Mark Simpson, who used it to refer to an urban male of any sexual orientation who has a strong aesthetic sense and spends a great deal of time and money on his appearance and lifestyle.

Jennifer Y. said...

"...who has a strong aesthetic sense and spends a great deal of time and money on his appearance and lifestyle."

Couldn't that describe just about any male in Hollywood?

Lois said...

Ooh, Mikey! Loved watching him on the Mets. Alas, since i"m only a Mets fan, I haven't seen him since. LOL :) And niiiiice pic of Pierce there too!!! :)

The closest to a metrosexual male for me would be Cary Grant and George Clooney. Yes, they are suave, but they are also so manly. I definitely more interested in the guy's guy. Beckham is way too metrosexual. The matching cornrows will Posh was too, too much.

CrystalG said...

Johnny Depp comes to mind when I think of metrosexual. From photos I have seen of him at appearances, he takes great care with his appearance and makes a statement.

MD said...

I agree with Crystal, Johnny Depp is a definite metrosexual. Orlando Bloom and Jonathan Rhys Meyers I think.

Carolyn A. said...

Wow what a discussion. My hubby is a regular jeans and sweatshirt kind of guy on his days off. He's who I really go for... and it's a good thing cuz I married him.

Anyway Carly, love the Hot Zone books and looking forward to the next one - whatever type of guy he is.

Mary J said...

I think a lot of the metrosexuals are really feminine looking, like Orlando Bloom and Johnny Depp. What about that guy from Red Eye, Cillian Murphy. I think he's a metro

Stacy S said...

I'd have to go with maybe Jude Law.
I liked Roper in The Hot Zone. Can't wait for his story.

LizeeS said...

Happy Friday Bellas,
I've been away most of this week and missed the great discussions with the Plot Monkeys. Had to make sure I got a chance to greet Carly, however. I love the Hot Zone books - and always the most recently-read one best, so Riley Nash is the fave-of-the-moment! Thanks, Carly!

I just saw a young actor of Indian heritage on Leno last night - Sendhil Ramamurthy from the show Heroes. He was actually born in Chicago and raised in San Antonio. He speaks with a British accent on the show and is lovely to look at there - but "in person" he is charming and, quite simply a stunningly "perfect" man, actually kind of more in the beautiful category. Don't know if he qualifies as metrosexual, but he looks like he'd spend time on his appearance even though he didn't sound at all like that was so important in his life.

Anyhow - I drooled.

And, yeah, George is pretty dang good, too. Metro or not.

Lizee

MaryKate said...

Lizee - I love Sendhil Ramamurthy! I have deep and inappropriate lust in my heart for Mohinder (that's his name on the show). I thought that the guy who plays Sayid on LOST was hot until I got a load of Sendhil. He's just beautiful. And I mean, actually beautiful!

Jennifer Y. said...

Sendhil Ramamurthy is definitely nice to look at. I always look forward to seeing him on HEROES.

alissa said...

Sir Laurence Olivier certainly could qualify as one. Va va. He was the real thing.

pearl said...

Sean Kanan is something else. Has has it all.

joelle said...

Tom Cruise fits into that category easily.

ellie said...

Arjun rampal. OMG. He is tops.

ev said...

Lizee- I drooled too. Too bad he is married. lol didn't you love his story about med school? And he is absolutely gorgeous.

hello?? Can anyone say Prince? There is an ubermetrosexual.

Once again we can not get through a day without mentioning George. Which is of course, fine with me.

Jennifer Y. said...

Yes...forgot all about Prince. He never appealed to me though

Carol said...

Hi all,

I would have to add Jax from General Hospital!

Have a good weekend! Carol. H.

LizeeS said...

MK, & Jennifer y - yeah Mohinder is probably my favorite on Heroes (along with the cute little Hiro - but he doesn't qualify as a hunk). I've also always liked Adrian Pasdar, he's got the odd angular look I like - and some funky cheek/chin scar thing going. But he was cuter (less um, skinny) in Judging Amy.

Ev - Sendhil's med story was great. Some doctor he'd have made - wonder if his whole family is this good looking!

Happy Weekend Bellas
Lizee

'aaah, okay. I hear you all. I'm not a fan of the PURE metro and I can't see writing one either. Roper will be a combo with metro elements, but he's a baseball player, hence a guy's guy.

What is a combo of a metro and a guy's guy? Good question, LOL.

You guys rock. I'm having fun with you all!

Jennifer Y. said...

We are having fun too!

This whole week has been a blast!

Kathleen said...

I am not a fan of the pure metro guy either. Definitely more of a mans man :) Now, if I can just find one...LOL

MsFlexie said...

Oyyyy... don't like metro men, sorry! Don't like the idea of having to share bathroom/mirror time or counter space with a man, not to mention I think they're neither straight, nor gay, but basically... confused!

LOL sorry if that sounds harsh, I was just being honest. I love a man's man!

I absolutely adored the HOT ZONE books, and am happy to say, I got them only because of Michelle's mention of the third book in RBTB!

Teresa said...

This has been a fun week with you gals being here all week. My picks for metrosexual would have to be Johnny Deep and George Clooney. I'm looking forward to reading the series!

ReadingAddict1 said...

I was a fan of Pierce Brosnan back when he played Remington Steele and he is definitely a metrosexual, but I think it was more the accent that drew me then his metro looks.

I don't think George Clooney is a metrosexual. I remember him on ER and he was as well groomed as the next guy but not excessively so. Just had to throw my two cents in ~Wanda

Michelle Buonfiglio said...

Um, you probably didn't notice, but this is my first post today. Kids are off from school and I didn't know til nine last night. I'm a little disorganized, ok?

Alright, I'm still reading through the posts, which rock, BTW. Did you know I get emails of your comments whenever you post and have to resist temptation to leave what I'm doing and read them?

Anyway, kellyr said up front what I've been thinking. My problem is, I have a hard time distinguishing from Metro Sexual to them being for the other team. Anyone else with this problem?

OK? While I loves me some gay men -- and a great m/m voyeur scene in the right novel -- sometimes a girl likes to know who's who. And when I sexually objectify a man, it really works best for me when he's straight. Not even mostly straight works.

Oh, does anybody remember the Sex and the City "Straight Gay Man" episode?

That said, I've been wondering how Carly's gonna do John Roper.

Back to perusing your posts...

Jennifer Y. said...

amy- what surprised you? the ex-hubby cop or the silk scaves/handcuff debate???

Lizees- I wonder if he would have been a gyn? that would have filled up his practice- one way to get the women there for their exams!!!

Michelle- I just sent you a "dirty" picture, but this one you can open!! LOL

I prefer a man who is a classic male. Nothing wrong with the other types but the more masculine the better.

LOL Carly! Glad you cleared that up! But aren't all of your heroes HOT?

I can't wait to read this one!

Julie in Ohio said...

I'm a little late to the party today but "Welcome back, Carly".

My vote for metrosexual of the year would go to Orlando Bloom with an honorable mention to Becks and Johnny Depp. It is really close.

I like a blue collar man who cleans up nicely. However, if he spends more time in the bathroom than I do, that would be a turn off.

principessa said...

David Hyde Pierce has the appearance of a genuine metrosexual. I always thought that he was great in his role and he is rather appealing.

Hugh Jackman is pretty good to look at.

Sue A. said...

I'd have to say Rupert Everett is the man that came to my mind first. Love love men with British accents. And he's tall, dark and handsome.

Jennifer Y. said...

Rupert Everett falls into that distinction that Michelle and kellyr mentioned...the one where you wonder what team he bats for. I did read that he "came out," but even before that I wondered.

That being said he is a great looking man and qualifies as a metrosexual under the definition that MaryKate provided. Nice choice Sue!

amy*skf said...

What up with Johnny Depp? Does he spend an inordinant amount of time on looking sloppy?

Don't get me wrong--he is yummi-liscious, but metro? I don't think he actually ever washes his hair.

By the way, Lizees and MK and everyone else--the guy from heroes should be carved in marble he's perfection.

Ev--you don't surprize me--you amaze me, But, um, I missed the scarves and handcuffs thing.

And Msflexie--you finally have a real pic. Gorgeous.
