Hero Construct: The Alpha Nerd

Update!!! Eric Selinger has agreed to guestblog for us sometime in July! We'll have all to ourselves a guy who not only reads romance, but is, well, a guy. Please. Don't thank me. Just doing my part for the genre.

Eric Selinger is the man of my dreams, a guy bright enough to a) love romance and, 2. think gathering academicians interested in the genre, and academic writing about the genre, is a nifty idea.

When I wrote him, he never assured me he didn't come up with the idea of Romance Scholar listserv as a way to meet more chicks. But once you get a sense of the impressive size of his, uh, endeavor, I think you'll agree: Eric Selinger's on to something here, and the genre owes him big.

What do you have to offer this project of Eric's?

What role should the reader play in romance scholarship?

Encore! Go to http://mailman.depaul.edu/mailman/listinfo/romancescholarto join Eric's Romance Scholar listserve, and visit the associated Wiki bibliography at http://www.romancewiki.com/Romance_Scholarship.

Encore due! How could I talk Alpha Nerds without giving props to the King, David "Princeton Hottie and W. Carlos Williams fan" Duchovny?

Encore tre! Thanks to Manda for bringing this to our attention!

Sounds like a fabulous idea! I say "way to go"!!! And, thank you, for that yummy picture of David Duchovny. I was a huge X-files fan back in the day and especially love that David is such a brainy hottie! LOL!

Leslie, I'm with you. I was a huge X-files fan. Never missed an episode, not even when I shattered my knee and came out of surgery on a morphine pump. First thing I asked for was a TV so I wouldn't miss the new episode, LOL! (It was the one about stealing organs - can you believe I still remember that?)

amy*skf said...

Eve--yes, I'm sure I remember every episode and what was happening in my life at the time.

I hope Manda sees this--cause it's almost like what she asked for--I don't know how you find these things Michelle.

amy*skf said...

Oh. Duh. The "thanks to manda" would have been a clue--yes?

Manda said...

Aww, thanks for the kudos, Michelle! I love that I can be both nerdy and love romance at RBTB! It's the best of both worlds!

I've really been enjoying this list-serve though the volume of emails it generates is huge. But I really feel like I am witnessing the birth of something. It's fascinating to see the ways that they are building the foundation for scholarship about ROMANCE!!! Very cool!

As for the place of readers, I think maybe more than in any other genre, readers play a huge role in shaping the genre. Look at the way Eloisa James wrote a new chapter for The Taming of the Duke at the request of her readers. And the fun thing about this list is that readers and writers are given a voice in an arena where in other disciplines only scholars would dare to tread. Very very cool!

And, sigh. Could I have had a bigger crush on Duchovny? Mulder was crushworthy, but when I was in grad school during the height of X-Files mania, Duchovny was the #1 English Department pinup. Well, figuratively speaking...

Manda said...

LOL, Amy! This is almost what I was wishing for, but I think I wanted something more library oriented. Or library staff oriented. Maybe we could start a sub-chapter...hehe. This list-serve thing seems to have a pretty big umbrella...

Eve, forgot to mention before that your DARK DESIRES got a shout on on the list-serve today as an example of neo-Gothic (though they didn't call it that).

Michelle Buonfiglio said...

Wait! I called DD (Eve's book, not King David)neo Gothic when I reviewed it. Because it's fresh; it can't be jammed into the old school gothic construct. I would argue that my opinion is correct beacause -- I want it to be. Look, Ma! I'm an academic. :)

Yes, Leslie. David is a hottie because he's got a big, beautiful brain. But may I be base and point out the size of his strong, masculine hands? And, oh, the imperfection of the nose gets me every time.

Good for you, Mon. Stop by, gander, then back to work. Glad you said hi. You, too, Ames. You know, I never watched X files much. Just dug him everywhere I saw him. Hoping Vivi stops in with her 2 cents today.

Manda, you're right. The listserve does gen a lot of digests. It may calm down. In, like six or so months. But it's a happy problem to know so many folks take the genre seriously. And I, too, think the readers have to shape our study of the genre, just so we don't get too conceptual, or read more or less into certain issues than necessary. That's what was wrong with the earliest studies of romance. "Researchers" had their own prejudices going in and set out to prove them. But now, as we can see on the RS Wiki biblio, there's a feast of scholarly writing and research out there that will benefit academician and reader.

Did I happen to point out Duchovny's sweet eyes?

Manda said...

Michelle, I think too that the number of postings on the list serve shows a. how much interest there is in the subject and b. how starved people have been for a list like this. And you need to get to the list and stake your claim on neo-gothic!!! Jump in there, lady!

Eve Silver said...

Manda - thanks for the heads up. I actually went over and posted a few more modern gothic names like Lydia Joyce, Donna Birdsell and Dawn Thompson.

Michelle - I loved the way you called Dark Desires a neo-gothic... excellent term!

Amy - sounds like you were a die-hard X-Filer, just like me, LOL!

I always rebelled against X-Files because my B-I-L was so die hard it made me sick. He had 2 hamsters that the named Scully and Mulder.

However, I really liked him in Return to Me with Minnie Driver. It showed a soft side that just melted my heart.

Michelle Buonfiglio said...

I'm way too shy to claim the term. I'm sure someone else used it, too. Nothing new under the sun and all...

XFile hampsters is a little Creepy JuieO. But weren't you saying he was playing rollerblade tennis when you met him? Or was that someone else. I can't really judge him. Cause I liked Barry Manilow.

I really think I need to start watching more TV.

Julie in Ohio said...

No, rollerblade tennis was my husband.
Brother in law married my sister.

Oh yeah DD is a very sexy alpha nerd. I adore him. One of my favorite movies is Evolution...love love love him in it. And of course the X-Files is still one of my favorite shows...my favorite 'Small Potatoes'. I love that episode, where the very nerdy shape-shifter guy shifts into Mulder and he goes to Scully's place to seduce her...OMG, best episode ever!

Did you ever see David D in "Kalifornia"? Fabulous B movie with a young Brad Pitt (I'm pretty sure it was Brad) -- it's been years since I saw the movie.

Brad is a serial killer, David & girlfriend give him a ride across the country.

Nancy

Manda said...

Aww, Michelle. You're so modest. I'll still think of you as the coiner...

Vivi, "Small Potatos" was a good one. I always liked it when they "got together" but it didn't count cause they weren't themselves. Made it seem more like forbidden fruit and all...

Julie, love love love RETURN TO ME. Heartwrenching and funny and smart and sexy. It's just a great little movie. And DD is supersexy in it...

Michelle Buonfiglio said...

Vivi! What do you think of DD's big, beautiful hands, Bella?

Goodness, Anny. Young Brad and David Duch? Jeepers.

Manda, you and JulieO keep talkin about Return to Me and all I keep thinking is the romance by Shannon McKenna. Most excellent Alpha biker hero. talks so dirty. shiver. And as my friend Michelle and I say, It's all about the biker. I can't see DD as the biker. Although I'd think a smart guy'd talk dirty real good. Forgive me. It's the weekend.

Julie in Ohio said...

Sorry, Michelle, no hot bikers in the movie Return to Me. Minnie Driver does ride a bicycle if you want to count that, though.

The movie is about David's wife gets killed and is an organ donor. Minnie Driver happens to be the person who gets her heart. It really is a heart wrenching film. Although is has its light moments and most importantly its HEA.

I hope that made a little sense. I'm really bad at describing things without giving away too much.

Manda said...

LOL, Michelle. I don't think this one is the same story as Shannon McKenna's! But, for it does feature an Irish/Italian restaurant! And a trip to Rome!

That was a great description, Julie. I think I'm just hungry so I had to add the restaurant bit. For some reason the food in that movie really sticks out in my memory.

Vivi Anna said...

Oh, I love Return to Me! Cried like a baby...or a Vivi without a sandwich...

DD has great masculine hands...mmmm, I love hands...so freakin' sensual..and his lips...OMG, can you imagine those locked on some part of your body? Tea Leoni is a very lucky lady!

Stacy~ said...

Yeah, I am a DD-head. Obsessed over him in Xfiles and saw Kalifornia - that was Brad Pitt btw. Too hotties to ogle in that one.

Did anyone ever see DD in "The Rapture" with Mimi Rogers (who later appeared in Xfiles)? Or Red Shoe Diaries? (Yes, I admit to watching those Showtime after-dark shows) Suffice it to say DD took me to places (or television) I never thought I'd go LOL. And I have no complaints - the man is HOT.

Vivi Anna said...

OH I loved the Red Show Diaries...have to brag that I've rubbed elbows with the producer of those programs...he has an affinity for erotica, and happens to be reading my book Hell Kat. So, I feel suddenly so much closer to DD this way...LOL

I could almost reach out and..stroke him...

Michelle Buonfiglio said...

Have you seen "Another woman;s Lipstick?" that's a new erotica piece from Red Shoe Diaries screenplays.

Glad we could dig on DD a little as an end of the week joyfest. I needed it!

Now I remember Return to me. What a surprise. Didn't see it. But everybody told me cause of the whoe transplant thing (and I've got the kidney...)But I got it from my brother. Why couldn't I have gotten my kidney from David Duchovny?

amy*skf said...

Ooh--that's why I loved Showtime--Red Shoe Diaries, I had forgotten about that. And DD's hands--yes! Don't forget about forearms (cripes! is that how you spell it?)

I can't believe I haven't seen Return to Me--I'm gonna rent it.

Nor have I read Return to Me--I know, Michelle, you told me to. Sorry.

leslie said...

I hope that if my GH-finalling historical gets published, it will fall under the "neo Gothic" realm. I've read both DARK DESIRES and Dawn Thompson's THE RAVENCLIFF BRIDE and I'm loving this "newish" genre. Good thing publishers are realizing there's a huge audience for it!

amy*skf said...

Aint that the truth leslie--good luck by the way.

And hey, cool news about Eric blogging with us.
